Through the L.A. Catholic High School Scholarship Program, Santa Clara has broadened its ability to serve students and alumni across that region. During the 2014-2015 year, Santa Clara distributed over $80 million in financial assistance to approximately 80 percent of its undergraduates. Each year, however, applications for this aid increase, with a typical undergraduate demonstrating nearly $13,000 in unmet need not addressed in annual financial aid packages.
This financial burden is especially daunting for those who apply from low-income households or with undocumented status. Many qualified students, some of whom are the first in their families to pursue a university education, see the sticker price and do not even consider submitting an application. With the help of generous donors, Santa Clara can reach out to diverse L.A.-area Catholic high school students throughout California personally and financially. Providing an additional $7,000 to $15,000 per student to what the University can already offer would meet their needs, often bringing costs below that of a state university or college.
SCU launched the Los Angeles Catholic High School (LACHS) Scholarship Program in 2008 with the goals of (1) increasing the successful recruitment of underrepresented students in targeted Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and (2) improving awareness of SCU as an option for academically qualified students in the greater Los Angeles region and now extends to 21 area high schools.
