Since its founding in 1986, the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics has grown into one of the premiere ethics centers in the world, thanks to the generosity of University alumni, corporations, foundations, and friends throughout our region and across the globe. Each gift builds a stronger ethical foundation for businesses, government officials, health care professionals, school children, college students, nonprofits, journalists, and Internet content providers and users.

Here’s what some of our alumni say about the impact the Center has made on their lives:

"One of the greatest tools that I took away from my Hackworth Fellowship at the Center was the Framework for Ethical Decision Making. This has always been a great guide for me when I come across any ethical dilemma. It even helps me identify if there is an ethics question involved." —Mike Loza ’03, regional director of business development, Sanveo

"I was a middle class kid from the Silicon Valley, but when I went through the Health Care Ethics Internship through the Center, I came into contact with people from different backgrounds.  When I work with patients now, I’m prepared to discuss ethical issues a lot more from their perspective than I would have been had I not thought about these issues during my college years."—Chris Cirone, ’04, pediatrician

"I felt connected to Character Based Literacy Program the Center offers for middle and high school students because a lot of those students are having struggles.  The curriculum teaches you how to build a better character, to learn about yourself and who you are, to make good ethical choices."—Alex Jara, ’09, educator, doctoral candidate, University of New Mexico
