We have many reasons to be thankful as a Department. We continue to attract exceptional students to our major and celebrate the engaged support of talented alumni. Our students are doing some incredible work. After supporting the research of Professors Laura Robinson and Alma Garcia, Barbara Bautista participated in a summer internship with the prestigious Regional Research Institute in San Jose. Raul Orellana works as a Fund Development Assistant at the Sacred Heart Community Service in San Jose while he graduates in June. Maryam Khatoon has volunteered with such organizations as UNICEF, Red Cross International, and the International Rescue Committee assisting refugees. She also leads our Undocumented Student and Allies Association (USAA) on our campus. These are just some of the wonderful things our students are doing because of support from our alum.
As a Department, we strive every day to ensure that students receive a quality education that will set them up for success after they graduate—whether we are in a pandemic or not! We were able to re-activate our Sociology Club which plays an essential role in the professional socialization of our students and the department is very enthusiastic about the prospects of working with students to energize our sociology community on campus. Additionally, we created an Applied Sociology Research Fund which will fund activities that support the professional development of our students whether they decide to pursue graduate studies or enter the job market. All of these amazing accomplishments wouldn’t be possible without the support of people like YOU in our community!
