Since the late 1970s, the de Saisset Museum has presented a permanent history exhibition, which has offered SCU students and the greater community a sense of the history of this place.
The former exhibition, California History, underwent several changes and developments over the decades with the addition of new artifacts and interpretive information. However, since 2015 the museum has undergone a focused, concerted project of redesigning the messaging and offerings of this exhibition.
California Stories from Thámien to Santa Clara, that opened in January 2020, is the museum's new permanent history exhibition that traces aspects of Ohlone heritage, Mission period history, Californio lifestyles, and early Santa Clara College events, to offer insight into the changes across Santa Clara Valley and the roots of Santa Clara University.
Though “permanent”, this exhibition is not seen as static. Through continued work and collaboration with the Ohlone community, subject matter experts, and SCU faculty, staff, and students, we look forward to incorporating more stories. In the next phases of this redesign, we plan to incorporate oral histories, sound, and additional resources. We cannot wait to engage with SCU students in multimedia projects to grow this exhibition’s offerings.
Your support through a donation to the de Saisset Museum California History Fund will enable us to continue to expand this exhibition and this resource for future Broncos and the greater Bay Area community.
