In Environmental Studies, field trips are ESSENTIAL
You can't really study the environment without getting outdoors! And whether indoors or out, ESS has always highly prized hands-on learning, including internships and research opportunities. Our program develops students who can apply the skills they learn in the classroom to real-world problems.
This past year, your gifts helped students get experience towing for plankton on a research vessel plying San Francisco Bay; sent natural history students deep into the insect and arachnid collections at the California Academy of Sciences; supported students doing summer internships in environmental justice, conservation, and sustainability; and purchased equipment for students to explore wetlands and tidepools.
Your support puts intensive, hands-on educational experiences within reach of every student. Thank you so much!

Professor and Chair of ESS
"I'm so grateful I received a Baja scholarship, and was able to participate in this unique learning opportunity. I hope that many other students in need of financial assistance will be able to do the same."
– Julia Jenak, Class of 2021
