Communication Department

Help us jumpstart our new
Communication Career Lab!

With the generous support from the Lowe Family, the Communication Department is delighted to announce the formation of our Career Lab.

Challenge Alert: When the Communication Department receives 50 gifts, Bronco parents Rick and Shannon Lowe will make a $10,000 gift to the Career Internship Lab.

The Communication Career Lab, located at 132 Vari Hall, supports Communication students as they prepare for their future careers.  Amy Tully Eriksson, Ph.D., Department of Communication Internship Coordinator, and a team of Peer Career Advisors provide students with support for exploring career interests, applying to internships and career opportunities, building resumes, networking via LinkedIn and Bronco Exchange, preparing for interviews, and more. Dr. Eriksson also teaches the Communication 198: Internship course, which provides students with an opportunity to earn credit for their internships while developing professional communication skills. Additionally, she works with campus and external partners to develop internship and experiential learning opportunities for Communication students.

Working for UMC inspired me to apply to USC's Digital Social Media graduate program.”

Support Journalism Education

Now more than ever, responsible journalism is vital to our democracy.

The  journalism program in the Communication Department has trained determined and ethical journalists for decades. Recent graduates report for CNN, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and numerous other major media outlets. They write award-winning books such as Battle for the Bird: Jack Dorsey, Elon Musk, and the $44 Billion Fight for Twitter's Soul and Bones: Brothers, Horses, Cartels, and the Borderland Dream. And they win Pulitzer Prizes — journalism's highest honor — for their coverage of local and national events.

Your generous donation will help journalism students by supporting three areas:

Internships: One of the fundamental elements of a journalism education is completing an internship that enables students to gain real-world experience and put what they've learned in the classroom into action.

Events: The journalism program regularly hosts guest speakers, sponsors workshops, and plans other gatherings that enable students to interact with professional journalists.

Ongoing Journalism Programs: The emphasis has annual expenses for membership in organizations such as the Society for Professional Journalists, student contest entry fees, and sponsorship of the annual Santa Clara University High School Journalism Awards. These and other activities help students participate in the larger journalism world, gain access to valuable resources, and earn recognition for their work.

We appreciate all your help in assisting the journalists of tomorrow reach their goals.

Jeremy Herb '08 now covers national politics for CNN.

Kurt Wagner '12 is an author and journalist covering social media and messaging for Bloomberg.

Many journalism students join the staff of The Santa Clara student newspaper to hone their skills and inform the campus community.
